Santon cylinder: poor flow repair

The utility room and three bathrooms had very poor water flow, while the kitchen and outside taps were unaffected. Flushing a toilet could reduce the shower flow to little more than a dribble.

Flow and pressure tests traced the fault to the multibloc valve serving the Santon Premier Plus cylinder and balanced cold supply. We fitted a replacement valve and restored the water flow.

Common Cylinder Problems

A symptom can have several causes. We check the cylinder and its associated plumbing before recommending a repair.

No hot water

A cylinder that stays cold or heats intermittently may have a fault with its thermostat, immersion heater or controls. We investigate the cylinder and its associated components to identify the cause.

Poor hot water flow

Reduced flow can come from restrictions at taps, shower outlets, inlet controls or elsewhere in the system. We check where the restriction starts before recommending a repair.

Dripping tundish

Dripping or running water through the tundish can relate to the expansion vessel or internal air gap, pressure controls or safety valves. We check the system to identify the cause.

Leaks around the cylinder

Water around a cylinder can come from a valve, joint or pipe connection as well as the cylinder itself. We locate the source of the leak and assess the repair needed.

Annual Cylinder Servicing

Regular servicing checks the condition of the cylinder and its safety components. Manufacturers including Megaflo and OSO recommend an annual service, with the work suited to the particular model.

We follow the manufacturer's maintenance requirements and record the work carried out. Tell us about any existing leak, loss of hot water or other fault when booking, so we can allow for diagnosis as well as routine servicing.

Keep your service records: regular maintenance may be a condition of the manufacturer's warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should an unvented cylinder be serviced?

An annual service is recommended for many models, including Megaflo and OSO cylinders. Follow the requirements for your particular cylinder and retain the service records for any relevant warranty conditions.

Why is water dripping through the tundish?

Possible causes include a problem with the expansion vessel or internal air gap, pressure controls or a safety valve. The cause needs to be diagnosed. Do not block or cap the tundish or its discharge pipework; continuing discharge should be assessed by a competent engineer.

Do you repair Megaflo and OSO cylinders?

Yes. We carry out repairs, servicing and fault diagnosis for Megaflo and OSO unvented cylinders, as well as Gledhill, Joule, Telford, Santon and other makes.

Why is the hot water pressure or flow low?

Restrictions can occur at individual taps or shower outlets, in inlet controls or elsewhere in the system. Tell us whether the problem affects one outlet or the whole property, and whether the cold water is affected too.

Does the whole cylinder need replacing?

Not every fault requires a new cylinder. Problems with valves, controls and connected pipework may be repairable. We assess the system before advising on a component repair, replacement or further manufacturer investigation.

Can you give a quote from photographs?

Photos help us identify the cylinder and its visible components. Some work can be discussed in advance, while faults affecting heating, flow or safety devices may need an on-site inspection before the repair and parts can be confirmed.

Do you carry out gas boiler repairs?

No. Our cylinder work covers the hot water cylinder and its associated plumbing. If an investigation points to a gas boiler fault, we will explain the findings so you can arrange the appropriate boiler repair.

What areas do you cover?

We cover Manchester, Trafford, Stockport, Sale, Altrincham, Salford and nearby areas, including the Heatons. Send us your postcode and we will confirm availability for your location.

Need Help With Your Hot Water Cylinder?

Send us your postcode, the cylinder make and model, and a short description of the problem. Photos of the cylinder label and any visible leak help us understand the job before arranging a visit.
